Water is the key to life. However, in the El Paso Border Region water is not only precious, it is scarce. Our unique locality means that water is a shared commodity which poses several challenges for many stakeholders. With an average rainfall of about 8 inches per year, the Paso del Norte watershed receives its water from the Rio Grande and the Hueco, Mesilla, and Jornada aquifers. It irrigates approximately 200,000 acres of farmland and is impacted by the needs of over 2 million people living primarily in the cities of Las Cruces, New Mexico, El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Join us for our next Nerd Night as we explore the current state of water in the Border Region, share ways we can be water smart and conserve our water, and discuss plans for future water needs and supply.
You will also have the opportunity to learn more about and visit the Smithsonian’s Water/Ways exhibit on display at the Centennial Museum. This exhibit takes a deep look at water (an essential component of life on our planet), which powers the environment’s engine, impacts climate and helps shape and sculpt the landscape.

The Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens was built to celebrate the anniversary of Texas independence, making it the oldest museum in El Paso.
