The Play That Goes Wrong

by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer & Henry Shields
Directed by Frieda Voeks

Auditions – June 26-27, 2023 7 pm
Performances – August 25 – September 10, 2023

Welcome to opening night of the Cornley University Drama Society’s newest production, The Murder at Haversham Manor, where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous.  This 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show – an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines).  Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences!  Part Monty Python, part Sherlock Holmes, this Olivier Award-winning comedy is a global phenomenon that’s guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter!

Let The Right One In

by Jack Thorne
Directed by Rebecca Condra

Auditions – August 14-15, 2023 7 pm
Performances – October 13-29, 2023

Oskar is a bullied, lonely teenage boy living with his mother on a housing estate at the edge of town when a spate of sinister killings rock the neighborhood.  Eli is the young girl who has just moved in next door.  She doesn’t go to school and never leaves the apartment by day.  Sensing in each other a kindred spirit, the two become devoted friends.  What Oskar doesn’t know is that Eli has been a teenager for a very long time.  An enchanting, brutal vampire myth and coming-of-age love story adapted from the best-selling novel and award-winning film.

The Charitable Sisterhood Christmas Spectacular

by Bo Wilson
Directed by Tracy Levin

Auditions – October 16-17, 2023 7 pm
Performances – December 1-17, 2023

Christmas, 1977 is only three weeks away, and the ladies of the Charitable Sisterhood are preparing for Second Trinity Church’s annual Christmas Spectacular…but they’re having trouble staying focused on their preparations because there’s a criminal on the loose—someone has stolen the baby Jesus figure from his place in the nativity scene! Sisterhood leader Bea Littleton is certain that the culprit is her longtime rival, but the truth can’t be revealed until the end of the Spectacular.  As a result, we watch from both onstage and backstage as the sisterhood performs sacred songs and satirical skits (after all, where else does Santa meet the Wise Men at the manger?).  The fun doesn’t let up until the hilarious revelation at the show’s climax, which leaves the audience and the sisterhood filled with the very best spirit of the Christmas season.

Sense and Sensibility

by Kate Hamill based on the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Minden Dickson

Auditions – December 18-19, 2023 7 pm
Performances – February 16 – March 3, 2024

A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters – sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne – after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable.  Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality.  It examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures.  When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

This is Our Youth

by Kenneth Lonergan
Directed by Christine Ambriz

Auditions – February 19-20, 2024 7 pm
Performances – April 5-21, 2024

In 1982, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the wealthy, articulate, pot-smoking teenagers who were small children in the ‘60s have emerged as young adults in a country that has just resoundingly rejected everything they were brought up to believe in.  The story follows forty-eight hours of three very lost young souls in the big city at the dawn of the Reagan Era.  Funny, painful, and compassionate, it is a living snapshot of the moment between adolescence and adulthood.

Blithe Spirit

by Noel Coward
Directed by Catherine Magni

Auditions – March 25-26, 2024 7 pm
Performances – May 17-June 2, 2024

This much beloved classic comedy concerns fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, who has remarried but finds himself haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira.  Clever, insistent and well aware of Charles’ shortcomings, Elvira is called up by a visiting “happy medium,” the eccentric and flighty Madame Arcati.  Needless to say, his current wife, Ruth, is unamused.  Will Charles be forever haunted by his “blithe spirit”?!
