Walking Tour of Manhattan Heights

February 10 @ 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

FREE WALKING TOUR OF MANHATTAN HEIGHTS THIS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, AT 1:00-3:30 PM

Join architectural historian Max Grossman and take a walking tour of the beautiful historic homes of Manhattan Heights. (The area was designated as a historic neighborhood in 1979, making it the first neighborhood in El Paso to receive this honor.”)

By 1912, the refinery shut down and developers platted the land for residential homes. Architecture in Manhattan Heights includes buildings that represent Georgian Revival, Foursquare, Tudor, American bungalows, and Spanish-Italian architectural influences. Houses were designed by such famous architects as Otto Thorman and Mabel Welch, El Paso’s first woman architect.

The area includes Crockett Elementary School where German children of famous scientists such as Werner von Braun attended schools to be “Americanized” in the 1950s. Another beautiful building is St. Alban’s Church, a representative of English Gothic.
This event is a collaboration between Preservation Texas and Rio Grande Trails and Tales.

Meet at Memorial Park at Copper and San Marcial.
