Sheriff Oscar Ugarte reassured the community that these checkpoints are focused solely on traffic safety, not immigration enforcement. He stated, “We do not ask for immigration status, nor will we,” following concerns raised after a recent checkpoint in Horizon City.
These “stationary vehicle checks” aim to address the ongoing issues of unlicensed drivers and lack of insurance in our community. During a recent operation, deputies stopped 80 vehicles, resulting in two arrests and multiple citations for violations like no driver’s license and expired registration.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to continue these checks at various locations based on traffic data until they see improvements in compliance and a decrease in violations.
