“Tłusty Czwartek” (Fat Thursday) marks the beginning of “Ostatki” (the last week before Lent). According to the Polish tradition, Ostatki is the time to indulge in sweet and fatty foods that will not be consumed for the upcoming 40 days of fasting. Fat Thursday is especially known for the mass consumption of “pączki” (donuts). This custom arose from the practical need to use up left-over lard and sugar, which were not allowed during Lent. The sweet tradition continues to this day and eating a lot of donuts on Fat Thursday is considered good luck.
