Hey everyone! 📢 I wanted to share my experience from the community meeting this past Saturday about the new school program for PE and “WIN”.
Before the meeting, I had no clue about it and only found out through a KFox news article. There was very little communication to parents, EPISD board members, and the wider community, which left us feeling in the dark.
As I dug deeper, I found Dr. Sayavedra's newsletter, but the information was limited. The district's survey was also hard to understand. With everything going on after COVID, I don't want my kids to be guinea pigs. Stability is crucial for us right now. But the lack of clear information and communication made me worry that this plan would be rushed and not well-thought-out.
During the meeting, the superintendent and the board apologized for the poor communication and pledged to do better. They acknowledged the need to engage with the public, community partners, teachers, students, and parents to find the best way forward.
The meeting started with presentations on the school board's goals and the district's mission statement. Then they went into the thought process behind the new program, but it still wasn't clear to many of us.
They talked about the survey and the “WIN” concept, which stands for “What I Need”, but honestly, it was all a bit confusing. They seem to be lumping various services together, like GT and special needs and discipline, under this time block. Many questions were raised about how this would work and what about GT and SpED services?
We were split into groups based on grade levels and community engagement, but it got confusing for those of us with kids in different grades. There were a lot of questions about implementation, staff training, and equity. Some parents and teachers were really upset, but not all concerns were addressed fully. I have included videos to share the experience with you.
One trustee mentioned they were initially against the idea but changed their mind after speaking with the superintendent and others. They mentioned Socorro as a model, but there were no clear results to show its success. That was concerning to me, as I don't want my kids to be part of an experiment.
After the meeting, I still don't fully understand the “WIN” program. The public comments and survey might help shed more light on it, but right now, it feels more like a sales pitch than a well-explained plan. I agree with others who want regular check-ins to see if this program is successful or if adjustments are needed. Our kids' future is too important to gamble with, especially after the challenges of COVID.

¡Hola a todos! 📢 Quería compartir mi experiencia en la reunión comunitaria del pasado sábado sobre el nuevo programa escolar de Educación Física y “WIN”.
Antes de la reunión, no tenía idea de qué se trataba, y solo me enteré a través de un artículo de noticias de KFox. La comunicación con los padres, miembros de la junta de EPISD y la comunidad en general fue muy escasa, lo que nos dejó en la oscuridad.
Al investigar más, encontré el boletín de la Dr. Sayavedra, pero la información era limitada. La encuesta del distrito también fue difícil de entender. Después de todo lo que ha sucedido después del COVID, no quiero que mis hijos sean utilizados como conejillos de indias. La estabilidad es crucial para nosotros en este momento. Pero la falta de información clara y comunicación me hizo temer que este plan fuera apresurado y mal pensado.
Durante la reunión, el superintendente y la junta se disculparon por la mala comunicación y prometieron mejorar. Reconocieron la necesidad de involucrar al público, socios comunitarios, maestros, estudiantes y padres para encontrar la mejor manera de avanzar.
La reunión comenzó con presentaciones sobre las metas de la junta escolar y la declaración de misión del distrito. Luego explicaron el proceso detrás del nuevo programa, pero aún no quedó claro para muchos de nosotros.

Nos dividieron en grupos según los niveles de grado y la participación comunitaria, pero fue confuso para aquellos de nosotros con hijos en diferentes grados. Hubo muchas preguntas sobre la implementación, capacitación del personal y equidad. Algunos padres y maestros estaban realmente molestos, pero no todas las inquietudes fueron abordadas completamente. He incluido videos para compartir la experiencia con ustedes.
Un miembro de la junta mencionó que inicialmente estaba en contra de la idea, pero cambió de opinión después de hablar con el superintendente y otros. Mencionaron a Socorro como un modelo, pero no hubo resultados claros que demostraran su éxito. Eso me preocupó, ya que no quiero que mis hijos sean parte de un experimento.
Después de la reunión, todavía no entiendo completamente el programa “WIN”. Estoy de acuerdo con otros que desean un seguimiento regular para ver si este programa tiene éxito o si se necesitan ajustes.
